The usual way from Uzhhorod to Budapest runs through the Tysa (Ukraine) – Záhony (Hungary) border crossing. From there the road goes through Nyíregyháza, and for most of the journey you drive on the M3 motorway. How long the trip takes
The drive itself takes about 4 hours. The border crossing comes on top of that, and its duration depends on the day of the week, the season and the queue, so it cannot be predicted in advance. A few points to keep in mind when planning:
- if you have a flight or a train from Budapest, leave a buffer of several hours instead of timing your departure to the minute;
- before you leave, check the current situation at the checkpoint on the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine resources;
- for a round trip, plan the time for each direction separately: queues on exit and on entry can differ.
At the border: what to prepare in advance
Every passenger must have the documents required to cross the border; for Ukrainian citizens this is a foreign travel passport. For men aged 18 to 60, border guards check a military registration document, and the right to leave the country is determined by the martial-law rules currently in force. These rules have changed more than once, so check the current list for your category on the website of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine before you book the trip.
